English Language Challenges

About my experience learning English at university I can say that has been very useful to know more about the language in a cultural sense. One of the most important things that I retrieve from this class is the different points of view that we could know and discuss. Something that I learnt more deeply is that English has a history and each group or community in their geographical location has its own way to speak and interpret language. Also, I added more words to my vocabulary. Practicing is always good to know more words, their meanings and how we can use them.

I think that blogs are an entertaining tool to learn, but I think is more useful to practice how to speak. It’s true that we have to know how to write, but in my opinion writing is something that you can practice by your own and speaking is something that requires more help.

About the aspects of my English that need to be improved, I think that speaking is something I have never to stop practicing, because I don’t live in a country where everyone speak English all the time, so if I don’t improve this with practice I won’t get speaking skills.

Outside the English class, I’m using English for different things. In first place, I use it sometimes to read some science academic texts that are not translated. In many cases I have found very useful texts for different projects or works that have no translation, so it’s necessary to know English to read them.

CHANGES TO MY STUDY PROGRAM

When they ask me about anything that I would change to my career (Journalism) I always think that one of the most necessary changes is related to the faculty facilities. For example, I think that the amount of radio and television studios is not enough for all the students from ICEI so the infrastructure could be improved; I also believe that technological equipment like microphones, video and photo cameras, voice records and many others should be more. We really need this equipment to do our work and not all of the students can pay for them since they are very expensive so I think that the faculty should have them.

In terms of specialization, I would like to see a greater variety of topics such as science, international relations, sports or music.

Another change I would do is about the workload. This year I have felt in many occasions that time in the class room is not well used and we have to do a lot of work, besides to study for a test, at home. I know our career is getting more practical and less theoretical with the time, but maybe we should have more facilities and have more time during the day to report, filming our reportages and documentaries, taking photos, etc. I imagine that for film students this situation must be worse. I know all classes are important, but there are times where we have to prioritize some activities.

An Artist You Love - Michal Pudelka

Michal Pudelka is a visual artist and fashion photographer, originally from Bratislava. He creates weird and wonderful editorial shoots for clients including Valentino, Vogue Italia and AnOther.

Pudelka is currently based in London and is represented by the agency of Katy Barker. His editorial work pushes the boundaries of fashion photography, often exploring surreal and dreamlike imagery.

Particularly in shoots created in natural environments, Pudelka captures the models interacting with their surroundings in a way that removes a sense of genuine spatial context, presenting instead an ethereal vision of otherworldly encounters.

Working alongside stylists such as Sarajane Hoare and Paul Sinclaire, the Slovakian photographer exhibits repeated colours and figures within the frame, collating elements of the uncanny in everyday life. Pudelka’s work sits on the borders of reality and imagined spaces, showcasing high fashion in the realm of outtakes from fairytale stories.

I met Pudelka in the photography course because I had to research trends in editorial photography. What I like the most about his work is its framing and the symmetry he use as a result of the models.

Post 7 - Current Issues.

Today begins a new testing process to access to higher education, PSU test. 294,175 were enrolled this year. But what knowledge does this test measure? Today I want to talk about inclusion in education and access barriers.

How many in situation of disability students can go to university?

In 2016, the School Inclusion was published. The School Inclusion Law allows establishments to create their own admission selection for these cases, without any oversight by the Ministry of Education. An inclusive society, the right to equal opportunities and the desire to educate oneself today are threatened.

Chile, although it's attached to international agreements to protect people in a situation of disability, doesn't occur in practice. Parents are forced to try it in many schools for a place in a class.

According to the results of the II National Study on Disability, 5.8% of the population from 2 to 17 years old is in a situation of disability, that is, 229,904 people According to SENADIS data, the percentage of the population aged 4 to 17 years in a situation of disability 96.0%. The figure of 4.0% corresponding to 9,196 is outside the educational system children and youth.

The state has to take care of the problem. Must act effectively, because we are talking about the rights of people and today they're violated by this law.

POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

I am very interested on the digital way of making journalism. So I am not thinking about a specific course, but if I did a postgraduate course, I definitely would like to study something related to the digital communication or photojournalism.

The main reason to study this it has to do with the fact that today almost all the works are getting digitalized, and journalism it is not the exception. So I think it is very important to know how to inform people using all the technological tools that we have on hand today.

I will not say that I don’t want to keep the traditional trade of printing the editions of a magazine or newspaper; I think that it is a very good complement for a digital media. But I think internet it is a very powerful and useful tool that can help to expand all the benefits of the communication and that we have to make the most of it.

Searching for some courses on internet, I found one that is teached by the University of Chile, so this would be an alternative for studying here in Chile. But I want to study abroad, and take a part-time course for having a job also, maybe in Spain. I know that the Autonomus University of Barcelona gives several of these courses and some masters related to communication and audiovisual information and master of Photo Journalism.

So, the subjects that I would like to study are the use of technological tools, how to make multimedia and transmedia products to combine an entertaining way of making journalism with cultural products, especially music, and how to build and transmit this products.

MY FUTURE JOB

It is hard for me to imagine a specific job for my future, because I think that I need to try out many ways of making journalism that I have not experienced in depth yet. But currently I am working for a magazine called Bello Público, that is a website dedicated to publishing news, articles, interviews and reviews about different events and music.

I work as a writer and photographer for this site. I write articles, make interviews or album reviews and I go to concerts and then I tell that experience in a review.  So, I am sure that my future job will have to do with the cultural area and, specially, with music. Working on a radio it is an option too, but I like working behind the scenes, so I would not like to be a radio announcer.

I like working outdoors when I must go to events that include music or when I must interview bands and artists, but the rest of the work I prefer doing it sitting on my desk. In this sense, I think that a perfect work would be being part of a special and creative space to inform and entertain people, like a music magazine or radio, working both indoors and outdoors.

In the regard of working for a magazine, I would like to create something new and, specially, to use digital communication for that.

The opportunity of traveling for work it is not so distant, because this is an area of journalism that needs the journalist to live the experience in the field, so it would be great to have to travel for knowing talented people, new musicians and different ways of making journalism.

I don’t really know what I expect from the salary of my future job, I guess because the idea that I have is still a little vague, but I would like a salary that can afford me to support this method of work, I mean creating new spaces and living from the fusion of art and journalism.

This weekend I was at Fauna Primavera taking pictures!

EXPERIENCES

My experience with photography has grown within last few months. I have been practicing for more than 8 years and I feel that I still have many more years to go.

My grandpa gave mer my first camera when I was 10 years old, it is my great treasure. Model is Zenit and was one of the first analogous profesional, with that camera I learned to take my first photographs and to be interested in the area. The best part is when you go to develop the roll, then the magic comes true.

Photography is part of my life, I couldn't imagine myself without it, my grandfather used to said "live to capture perfect memories" and is now my philosophy of life.

Last year he assumed the responsibility of being a photo editor in the magazine of the university "Revista Bello Público" It has been a very satisfying experience that helped me grow as a photographer.  I have been able to portray television celebrities, influencers, and people related to the social sphere.

My last challenge was to accept a photo class for students and officials of the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Mathematics of the University, in Beauchef. Every day I strive to bring a better content to my students to share knowledge.

do you need a photo shoot? tell me!
